The Phantoms from Eindhoven were founded in 1962 by Roald van der Horst, Ad van der Ven and Fred Gundlach. After a few months Wally Soute and Martien van Rooij joined the group. The first single Jack The Ripper (June 1965) is mainly bought by members of the local fan club. The Phantoms is known nationally through a performance in the AVRO television program ‘Nieuwe Oogst’, with its own interpretation of James Brown’s ‘I’ll Go Crazy’. From September 25, 1965 on the record is in the Top 40 for 12 weeks. Successor ‘Tormented’ enters January 1966 to stay for 8 weeks. An album appears, but after a few memberchanges the group is dissolved in 1969. Singer Martien van Rooij continues to make music for fun and is part of the Topspin Band. In 2002 he founded The New Phantoms with songs from the sixties and seventies known alongside repertoire by The Phantoms.
